Rail Mail 2000 (9th / 10th September 2000)

The Nene Valley Railway held its first TPO event over the weekend of the 9th & 10th September 2000. The following is a small selection of the photographs taken at the event.
Great Western TPO 814 exchanging mail at Sutton CrossThe highlight of the event was the exchange of mail pouches using TPO 814 from Didcot.

The lineside apparatus had only been completed on the Tuesday before the event. The 'Standards' seen just beyond the ground frame are on long term loan from the Locomotive Club of Great Britain and the 'Gate', just beyond the pouch attached to the coach, was kindly loaned for the event by Didcot - we still need to make one of our own.

Note that one pouch has already been collected and that the pouches on the standard are awaiting the coach apparatus to collect them.

67004 prior to nameing Post Haste along side Class 40, D306The Saturday also featured the visit of new class 67004 for a naming ceremony at Wansford. The locomotive travelled light from Doncaster on the Saturday morning returning the same evening. This was the first visit of a class 67 to a preserved railway.

The loco is pictured here in platform 1 alongside the NVR's resident class 40, D306 "Atlantic Conveyor". D306 was itself built in 1960 for hauling mail trains, thus the two locomotives represent some 40 years of postal locomotive history.

67004 was the third member of the class to be named, following 67001 "Night Mail" and 67002 "Special Delivery".

Nameplate from 67004The nameplate as attached to the locomotive. It should be noted that due to the design of the nameplates they could not be bolted to the loco, instead they have had to be glued to the bodyside. As a result of this the nameplate can not be removed without cutting the bodyside. Post Haste should be with us for some time to come.
The 'third' nameplate for Post HasteMatthew Golton, General Manager of Rail Express Systems at EWS presents Allan Williams, Director of Corporate Affairs at the Post Office, with the third 'presentation' nameplate. Allan now has two nameplates as he also named 67002 "Special Delivery".
