The Travelling Post Office

The TPO Signal

Introduction

During the Rail Mail 2000 and 2002 events each of the TPO runs was operated with the use of flags to indicate to the staff on the train that everything was in place, i.e. pouches are hanging from the standards and that the gate is in the operating position and all members of the public and staff are in a safe location. This had worked well in 2000, but did not work at all well in 2002 due to the green flag clashing with the surrounding foliage of summer (2000 was in the Autumn).

A solution to this problem has been devised whereby a signal is placed in advance of the apparatus equipment, with the signal being operated by the lineside staff. When not in use the signal would be left in the "off" position.

The new groundframe23rd May 2004

The previous day the S&T department put in a very long day to install the groundframe and associated equipment for the new signal.

Here we see the groundframe installed on its wooden base with the signal wire connected to the signal which is some 540 yards to the east of the groundframe.

The signal arm has now been attachedThe signal post now has the arm attached that will be used during the TPO exchanges. The white cross indicates that the signal is not yet operational.
Both signal arms have now been attached13th June 2004

The new signals were completed on the Sunday before "Rail Mail 2004" and the picture shows both signals in their correct positions and in full operational condition.

Please note the blanking plate correctly fitted where the distant green lens would be if it were not a fixed signal.
