The control boxes for the electrics. The TPO's were capable not only of powering themselves, but also the vehicles connected on either side in the event that the other coaches electrical system failed. This was achieved by providing jumpers inside the coaches at each end that could be connected to the adjoining coach. Then by changing the selector, on the far left of the picture, the vehicle would either be in normal mode, supply mode or receive mode.It would not have been sensible to allow a coach to run at night while men were sorting letters and operating the apparatus without a backup for the lighting system. Note the label above the selector switch, this gave details of how to operate the system. |
A close up shot of the instruction label. There are instructions for each setting as well as a diagram of connections between coaches below. |
The photograph to the left and the one that follows is used to show the changes in electrical methods in the years that the LMS TPO coaches were in operation. When built M30272M had all its electrical cables hidden behind wooden battening, as shown here with a light switch inside one of the registered fittings. |
However, when electric train heating was installed and modifications after the Great Train Robbery the new cabling was installed inside metal conduit as shown on the left.Since the modifications made for the electric train heating and the Great Train Robbery will not be restored to the vehicle the only type of electrical runs will be as shown in the photograph above. |
