The Travelling Post Office

Future Museum at Ferry Meadows

Since the project to restore TPO M30272M started it has always been the NVR TPO groups intention to eventually construct a building in which to display the TPO when not in use. However, once the TPO project started to gain momentum an unexpected bequest was offered to purchase a support vehicle for the TPO. This resulted in the team having a rethink of its plans. There was now the opportunity to build not only a short mail train, but also to include a few passenger coaches and a museum in which to house this train and other mail related material.

As a result an eleven page proposal was developed and presented to the NVR Board, who wholeheartedly approved the scheme. As such Ferry Meadows yard was allocated to the project. Whilst planning has yet to start the following pictures show the potential that the site has. It will eventually contain a carriage shed for the vehicles to be restored in, a museum for the vehicles to be displayed in along with other road vehicles, an archive for rail related postal artefacts and an educational facility.

View of the east end of the yardMoving westwards slightly the space available for the access roads to the new shed can be imagined.
View of the centre of the yardOnce past the undergrowth the site opens up to reveal the space that is available to us. The siding on the right needs to be moved slightly to allow for the planned second platform at Ferry Meadows.

During 2000 and 2001 the team will start to draw up the plans for this site and start the process of raising the money required to fund it. This will obviously have to be staged so that sections can be completed as money is made available.
